Who We Are

Peace Lutheran Memphis is a congregation often referred to as “small, but mighty” in the heart of Midtown Memphis. Our community is laid back. Our worship style is traditional. We boldly open our space to all people, celebrating a community created by persons without regard to race, color, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age.

We are teachers, lawyers, professors, clerks, home-makers, IT specialists, and students. We laugh a lot, eat donuts after worship, and value our Lutheran heritage.

Peace was established in June of 1924 when nine folks gathered in one of their homes and decided that they felt called to establish a presence in Memphis for The United Lutheran Church in America. On October 7, 1924, the name First United Lutheran Church of Memphis was adopted. In 1985 the name was changed to Peace Lutheran Church. In 1988, we became a member of the Evangelical Church in America when The Lutheran Church in America joined with others to form the ELCA.

Our building is at the corner of Willet and Jackson, an established diverse neighborhood in Memphis. The congregation was integrated in May of 1978. We continue to seek ways to welcome all of our neighbors.

We are only a mile from Rhodes College and not more than 5 miles from most downtown locations including St. Jude Hospital.
